If you find a 'Superior' piece of armor with +Enhanced Defense, a Superior Weapon with +Enhanced Damage or a Helm/Weapon that has +Skill bonuses for a certain class, all of these will remain on the final Rune Word that is created. The cheapest of all the runewords, Steel can still be useful while you level up early on. Result: 20 Enhanced Damage +3 To Minimum Damage +3 To Maximum Damage +50 To Attack Rating 50 Chance Of Open Wounds.

Its Open Wounds mod may make it worthwhile to keep as a 'swap' weapon despite its other mediocre mods. As Steel is easy to make, it can be useful to melee characters in the early game. Keep in mind that all Rune Words you create will retain any pre-existing bonuses found on the item. Steel is the rune word Tir El for swords, axes, or maces in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.
